History and transformation
Downtown Miami developed in the early 20thcentury along the Miami River and quickly became South Florida’s financial nucleus. Its first skyscraper, the Freedom Tower, later served as a Cuban refugee processing center and today houses the Museum of Art and Design. Since the 2000s, large-scale public and private investments have turned the area into a mixed-use neighborhood filled with residential towers, parks, and cultural venues.
